Project Based
How does it work?
FUSE PRESS is interested in working with professional artists who have a specific printmaking goal in mind. This could be a body of work or several print-related works that might accompany a body of work that is in another medium. This is NOT intended for those who would like to learn about printmaking, workshops are better suited for that purpose. Artists should have an idea concerning imagery and scale, but willing to consult with the FUSE PRESS staff to further realize their ideas. The timeframe should realistically be around 1-2 months from beginning to end of the project.
What is included?
Use of the FUSE PRESS studio during monitored hours (see hours for details). Materials such as printing matrix (woodblock, copper for etching, screens for silkscreen), substrates (what is being printed on, i.e. paper, fabric, metal), inks, and tools are the responsibility of the Artist. In certain circumstances, there may be a cost sharing of materials where FUSE PRESS gets a portion of the edition in compensation that can be sold at market price. FUSE PRESS will have some materials on hand that can purchased for convenience, such as transparencies, copper, wood for carving, etc.
Requirements:
All Project Based Members are required to take a Training Session for the particular apparatus and workflow that relates to their project. We know that many artists have experience with presses and exposure units and solvents, but when we use another facility we like to learn the way they do it and adhere to their rules. We’ve found you can pick up interesting tips and it keeps us from potentially damaging their equipment and their studio, which we want to respect.
Proposal Guidelines:
1. A paragraph that addresses the concept of the work intended. This should be more logistics than an artist statement. As an example: “I am completing a series of sculptures for an exhibition and would like to make some silkscreens that explore similar ideas. I would ideally like to do them at 20” x 24” and complete 6-8 different images that would be editioned to 40 each.”
2. Images of previous or related work. Artists should include a minimum of 10 images that are from previous or current work for the FUSE PRESS staff to determine eligibility of scope and feasibility of the intended project. This can be a website link in the application submission.
3. Timeline. If wanting to do a 1 month project based project, explain what will happen in each week and expected number of hours. For example: Week 1: Grounding Plates, Image Transfer, Needling (7 hours) Week 2: Needling and Etching (6 hours) Week 3: Test Printing, Re-working Plates, Color (10 Hours) Week 4: Editioning (8 hours). If you are planning on a 2 month project, also outline the intended timeline.
4. Cost is negotiated depending on the scope and time required. You should submit what your budget is for the project. FUSE PRESS will also have some visiting artists who would be available for an additional cost to help with editioning, or related work.
